Fireweed Veterinary Services

About Fireweed Veterinary Services
Fireweed Veterinary Services provides in-home pet euthanasia and end-of-life care for families across Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer, Wasilla, and the surrounding Mat-Su Valley in Alaska. The practice is led by Dr. Amanda Grimes, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine who graduated from Colorado State University in 2020. After working in general practice, Dr. Grimes found her calling in end-of-life care and began providing in-home euthanasia services in 2022, driven by the profound connections she witnessed between pets and their families during their final days.
Dr. Grimes serves dogs, cats, and small mammals — including rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, and mice — and is known for her generous, flexible approach to scheduling. She maintains a patient cancellation policy, understanding that a pet's condition can change moment to moment, and never charges a cancellation fee when families cancel more than three hours before their appointment. For cremation aftercare, Fireweed partners with Passages Pet Crematorium and Grief Center in Palmer, Alaska, offering both individual and communal cremation options with transparent weight-based pricing.
Services Offered
Fireweed Veterinary Services provides the following services to families in the Anchorage, Alaska area:
- In-Home Pet Euthanasia (dogs, cats, and small mammals)
- Sedation-First Protocol for a Peaceful, Painless Passing
- Individual Cremation (ashes returned via home, vet office, or pickup)
- Communal Cremation (ashes interred in Forget-Me-Not Memorial Garden, Alaska State Fairgrounds)
- Clay or Ink Paw Print Keepsakes
- Complimentary Fur Clipping
- Transport and Aftercare Coordination
What to Expect
When Dr. Grimes arrives, she meets your pet and answers any questions before administering a calming sedative — a 1- or 2-step injection that typically takes 5–15 minutes to take full effect. Once your pet is resting peacefully, and when you are ready, Dr. Grimes administers the euthanasia solution and monitors your pet's heart to confirm passing. The entire process is painless and allows as many family members, children, and other pets to be present as you wish. If aftercare is selected, Dr. Grimes coordinates transport to Passages Pet Crematorium in Palmer. For individual cremation, each pet wears a uniquely numbered stainless steel tag throughout the process to ensure accurate identification, and ashes can be returned to your home, your primary veterinarian, or picked up directly from the crematorium.
