Friend to Fern

About Friend to Fern
Friend to Fern is a Portland, Oregon pet aftercare provider and the first company in the state to offer terramation — commonly called pet composting — as an alternative to cremation or aquamation. Operating from the Croft Farm on Sauvie Island, a peaceful agricultural setting just outside the Portland metro area, Friend to Fern was founded on the belief that a pet's passing can be honored in a way that genuinely benefits the natural world. The company describes their approach as holistic, organic, and gentle, positioning terramation as a meaningful final act that returns a pet's life energy directly to the earth.
The terramation process uses individual cedar-built vessels for each pet, with a carefully balanced compost bed of wood chips, sawdust, and horse manure to create the ideal nitrogen-to-carbon ratio. Over a period of approximately 10 to 12 weeks, Friend to Fern adds oxygen to optimize the microbial environment, slowly and naturally transforming the pet's remains into rich compost soil. A metal tag number assigned to each vessel ensures that the soil returned to the family is exclusive to their pet. The resulting compost is delivered in a reusable burlap bag and can be used to plant a memorial tree, spread in a garden, or kept as a remembrance.

What to Expect
Families can arrange for Friend to Fern to pick up their pet from a Portland-area home or veterinary clinic, or bring the pet directly to the Croft Farm on Sauvie Island — a setting the company describes as a beautiful and peaceful place to say farewell. The process takes approximately 10 to 12 weeks from intake to completion, after which Friend to Fern contacts the family to arrange delivery of the composted remains. Pricing is $500 for cats and $750 for dogs, with both options including metro-area pickup and home delivery of the finished soil. Families who live outside the Portland metro area may request pickup for a moderate additional fee. The entire process uses no fossil fuels for heat, making it a significantly lower-carbon alternative to flame cremation.
