Ocean State Veterinary Specialists

About Ocean State Veterinary Specialists
Ocean State Veterinary Specialists (OSVS) is a state-of-the-art specialty and emergency veterinary hospital located in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, serving all of Southern New England including Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Founded in 2000 by a husband-and-wife veterinary team, OSVS was built on the belief that world-class veterinary care should be accessible to every pet and every family. Today, OSVS operates with a team of over 300 veterinary professionals, including board-certified specialists and emergency clinicians, who provide round-the-clock care in a teaching hospital environment that trains the next generation of veterinary professionals.
For families navigating a serious or terminal diagnosis, OSVS offers compassionate support at every stage. Their board-certified oncology, neurology, cardiology, and internal medicine teams guide families through difficult prognosis conversations and quality-of-life decisions. OSVS also runs a free Pet Loss Support Group, held virtually every other Tuesday, led by their on-site mental health counselor. The group is open to the broader community — not just OSVS clients — and provides a safe space to process grief, learn coping strategies, and find community with others who understand the depth of pet loss. A satellite location, Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services, is available in Swansea, MA for 24-hour emergency access.

What to Expect
When you bring your pet to OSVS — or receive a referral from your primary veterinarian — your pet is evaluated by a board-certified specialist in the relevant field, often in coordination with other specialists through a collaborative team approach. For critically ill or terminally diagnosed pets, the team works closely with families to assess quality of life, explore palliative options, and ensure pets remain as comfortable as possible. OSVS's ICU provides around-the-clock monitoring, and all admitted patients are reviewed each morning in rounds involving the full clinical team. Families going through bereavement can reach out to the mental health counselor or join the community Pet Loss Support Group at no charge.
